Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: From Bali to New York

The side event elaborated on the formal and informal outcomes of the 13th Conference of the Parties of the Framework Convention on Climate Change and how they might impact forests and forest peoples. It elaborated on the concerns of a large number of NGOs, IPOs and other social movements about the possible inclusion of forests in a global carbon market, the role of institutions with a long record of financing deforestation like the World Bank in these policies, and the impact of markets for environmental services on Indigenous Peoples, women and the monetary poor. It also addressed contradictions between Payment for Environmental Services systems and other proposed financial incentives to reduce emissions from deforestation and the promotion of agrofuels.
